fitzroy island, situated just a 45 minute ferry ride away from cairns, was one of the best destinations we visited during our north-east coast trip! it is also the location where i was lucky enough to spend my birthday at :)
although there were some downsides to our stay on the fitzroy island (we stayed at the fitzroy island resort and weren’t really happy with what the hotel that supposedly has 4,5 stars had to offer), the island is just beautiful!
the beaches are made out of corals (so don’t forget your coral shoes or flip-flops!) – i could have spend one entire day just searching for different, more detailed ones.
and a definite must do at the fitzroy island is snorkelling! the first time we got into the sea, while i was still fumbling around with my snorkelling equipment, D just put his head into the water and there it was, just below us – a huge sea turtle :D she was just minding her own business and let us swim with her for about 20 minutes! :) such a lovely experience! and not to mention, all the great barrier reef corals and fish?
there are also a couple of walks on fitzroy island that are, although not on the easy side, very beautiful! definitely do the summit walk, where you can walk (or climb :P) to the top of the island and (after sweating your soul out) enjoy the beautiful view! afterwards you can continue the walk from the top to the lighthouse. there is also a very quick and easy walk called the secret gardens walk, where you can walk through the rainforest and look at all the plants this forest has to offer.
another must do walk is the one to the nudey beach! and no, it’s not a nudist beach ;) but it definitely is the most beautiful one on fitzroy island. i’ll just let the photos speak for themselves ;)
i hope you enjoyed this post! if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask ;)
