since spending last year’s christmas holidays in sunny and very, very warm australia, we decided that we wanted to spend the end of 2017 in a place where there’s definitely going to be snow. a lot of it. so that’s when we decided it had to be lapland, finland. and even though we didn’t have any luck with seeing the polar lights (kind of sad, i know), there sure was a lot of snow! (and we were very sexy in our full body snow suits haha)
here are my highlights:
– the visit to a reindeer farm in the surroundings of rovaniemi. we started with feeding the reindeer with moss – or as they call it over there – reindeer chocolate! afterwards we went on a beautiful reindeer sleigh ride through the forest.
– ranua wildlife park – here you can see many of the polar animals in such a beautiful setting! it is a real winter wonderland. also, the pathways were very slippery, which added to the fun (see the video ;))
– a snowmobile ride! we went in the evening and drove on 40cm of frozen sea to a little patch of forest where a little tipi was waiting for us. there, we made a fire and sat by it with a hot blueberry tea and blueberry cake. (that’s another great thing about finland – everything is made of blueberries!)
– a visit to a husky farm! these dogs are soooooo loud. but also cute and cuddly! we took a short husky-sleigh ride and drank some more blueberry tea by the fire (could so get used to way of life haha)
we also celebrated the new year in finland. the cool thing was, we celebrated it on the border with sweden, and cause of the time difference between sweden and finland, we had 2 new years! first the finish one and then an hour later the swedish one! in between we were sleighing down the little hill nearby. all in all, it was quite perfect!
(can you see me in the photo? – i’m making a snow angel!)
i really fell in love with lapland and am definitely going back again – and i could not recommend it more! little wooden houses covered in snow, reindeers, hot blueberry tea by the fire and lovely landscapes – what more could you ask for?
have you ever been to lapland? what’s your favourite place and activity?
hope you’ll enjoy the video! (thank you to my partner in crime for it – D)
